The jails are failing to teach prisoners moral values. It has been observed that there is an increase in the number of lawbreakers, who attempt more crimes as soon as they are done serving their time in jails. The first half of this essay will discuss some flaws in detention centers, and the latter half of the essay will highlight some solutions to resolve those issues. There are many problems with the current scenario prison system. The procedure of locking up criminals in jails for their serious misdeeds has not done much when it comes to transforming them into nice human beings. To embark upon, it has been observed that many underdeveloped and developing countries deal with the criminals in a very horrible way inside the jails. They are provided with very low-quality food, water, and shelter facilities. Sometimes, jailers’ behaviors are also not acceptable towards them as there are many cases recorded where the prisoners are badly tortured physically and emotionally. Moreover, the prisoners are separated from the rest of the world in their isolated cells, with no one to take care of and talk with them, which is inhuman behavior. Such conditions give rise to develop a negative mindset. For instance, many women prisoners filed complaints of cruel sexual harassment with them inside the jails. However, there are few feasible solutions too to rectify the above-discussed issues. Firstly, all the detention centers should follow strict guidelines for prisoners’ rights, and there should be strict actions for those not following it. The convicts should be provided with proper food, water, room facilities (with adequate light and ventilation), clean sanitation, and physical activity grounds. Apart from other facilities, they should be provided with the proper education and moral values too. Cons should be taken for value education and moral ethics classes to no longer be the cons anymore. For example, Kiran Bedi had reformed Tihar jail to such an extent during her tenure that prisoners were already entrepreneurs in what they were taught inside the jails when they came out from prisons. To sum up, every prisoner should get adequate care and proper facilities for their basic needs inside their cells, so that when they come out of it will be a lesson for all.
